A place for galvanisers and painters to exchange knowledge

HISTORY

The working group was initially set up to realise the Benelux guideline "Powder and wetpaint on galvanised substrates", a collaboration of OnderhoudNL, Vereniging ION, VOM and Zinkinfo Benelux.

This guideline is the result of careful consultation between these industry groups and their members. About 20 VOM members contributed to this guideline. Knowledge about hot-dip galvanising, metallisation and duplex systems was exchanged and collected.

The Zinc working group belives it is important to share knowledge with clients and architects. It is also wise to to join forces with industrial associations working in steel, such as Infosteel, Bouwen mer Staal and Zinkinfo.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The purpose of the working group is twofold.

On the one hand, we want to inform all actors in the construction industry about the possibilities regarding galvanising and the application of powder and wet coating on galvanised substrates. The actors in the construction industry are all those involved in the design, construction, maintenance and renovation of steel structures (clients, architects, study firms, consultancies, inspection bodies, project developers, end users, etc.).

On the other hand, the working group wants to improve the dialogue between all parties in their expectations regarding sustainability and the quality delivered: CO2, the circular economy, etc. Research into alternative fuels such as hydrogen applications is also on the agenda. The surface treatment industry is absolutely circular and extremely sustainable. Steel and galvanising have a bright future ahead of them. The challenge is: zero waste, zero carbon, zero pollution.

NEWS

Revision of the "Steel corrosion protection guide

This guide, published in May 2012, is the result of collaboration between Infosteel, the VOM and ZinkInfo-Benelux and describes coating systems designed to protect steel structures against corrosion, whether these structures are inside buildings or exposed to the exterior. The aim is to provide guidance to all those involved in the construction industry (clients, architects, design offices, etc.) involved in the design, actual construction, maintenance and renovation of steel structures. A number of corrosion protection solutions are recommended, depending on the corrosion class (C1 to C5).
As many of the standards referenced have recently been revised, an update of this guide is desirable. VOM members wishing to contribute can contact Veerle Fincken (V.fincken@vom.be).
