REACH Revision Put on Hold

REACH Revision Put on Hold

On 27 April 2026, Jessica Roswall, European Commissioner for Environment, stated before the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment (ENVI) that the long-awaited plan for a comprehensive revision of the REACH Regulation would not proceed.

“We have come to the conclusion that we will not revise REACH at this stage.”

In its 2025 Work Programme, published on 11 February 2025, the European Commission had announced a revision of the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation, with the policy objective of “simplification”. The proposal, originally scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025, formed part of the Commission’s priority: “A new plan for Europe’s sustainable prosperity and competitiveness”.

VOM and the European umbrella association CETS view this decision as an important signal. It provides an opportunity to reassess current approaches and better align them with the practical needs of industry. Any future development of REACH should be targeted, science-based and pragmatic.
