VOM takes steps towards the BREF STM

In the context of the revision of the BREF STM, a European reference document on best available techniques for surface treatment, VOM is organizing a series of visits to industrial sites at several VOM member companies.

The main technical and regulatory challenges in DRAFT 1 of the BREF STM are the following:

  • the definition of “clusters” for water emissions, where activities with similar characteristics (specific water consumption, combined coatings, nature of substrates) and that can achieve comparable environmental performance are grouped together;
  • performance levels related to water consumption;
  • monitoring of PFAS;
  • alignment between European regulations, particularly regarding so-called “substances of concern”, especially hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), and the consideration of cross-interactions.

Institutional mobilisation
The planned site visits will take place in the presence of representatives from the Flemish authorities, the Department of Environment, the BAT (Best Available Techniques) Centre of Expertise, VMM, and VOM. This step is part of a broader process of revision of European regulation, with significant implications for the entire surface treatment sector.
