ECHA: Cr6 restriction proposal will soon be officially available.

As you know, in 2023, ECHA was given a mandate by the European Commission to prepare a proposal for a restriction specifically addressing the risks of using Cr(VI) and to encourage substitution.

The public consultation on the ECHA proposal for a REACH restriction on Cr(VI) will start in June 2025.

On April 30, 2025, ECHA published its proposal for a restriction on its website, ahead of the start of the public consultation on its proposed restriction on June 18, 2025.

The scope was initially limited to chromium trioxide and chromic acid but was later extended to 12 Cr(VI) compounds. Once the restriction is adopted, the Commission intends to remove these chemicals from the REACH authorization list, meaning that no authorization will be required for their use.

The public consultation will last six months and is intended to gather input from all concerned stakeholders. Input may relate to scientific or technical aspects, socio-economic impacts, implementation and enforceability, and the scope of the proposed restriction.
